Members of the Commodore Hotel staff pictured here at the entrance of the Titanic Experience. All the gang were on a training/familiarisation trip yesterday which took in the history of the Commodore Hotel, a guided walk on the Titanic Trail, and a tour of the Titanic Experience. Many thanks to Dr. Michael Martin of the Titanic Trail and Gillen Joyce of the Titanic Experience who facilitated this.

Here the gang are just about to enter the Titanic Experience which they enjoyed immensely. The Titanic Experience is housed in the original White Star Line Offices and it is through this building that the 123 passengers who departed Cobh on Titanic would have be processed. After going through the necessary formalities they would have congregated on the dock behind the building before boarding one of the two tenders, Ireland and America, from the White Star Line pier, which can still be seen today!

The Titanic Experience tells the story of Titanic through the eyes of those passengers who boarded Titanic from Queenstown. This story is recreated using innovative audio visual technology which brings it to life using cinematic shows, scene sets, holographic imagery, and touch screen technology. Its a must see on any visit to Cobh!

The O'Connell family from Manchester, New Hampshire, USA pictured yesterday at the very spot that the Titanic anchored. The O'Connell's took advantage of the settled weather to take a boat trip to the Harbour mouth to lay some flowers and say a few prayers as their commemoration towards those who lost their lives in the Titanic tragedy.

Very shortly visitors to Cobh will be able to avail of the opportunity to travel to this anchorage site. Dr. Michael Martin will shortly be launching a water-borne version of the Titanic Trail which will involve taking a boat trip to the very site that the Titanic anchored. This will be a guided trip with full commentary from Dr. Martin for the duration of the boat journey. Dr. Martin is the creator of the Titanic Trail in Cobh and is well known internationally as an expert on the Titanic.

The Commodore Hotel has teamed up with Dr. Martin to offer a package to visitors to Cobh which will allow participants to retrace the footsteps of those passengers who embarked on Titanic from Cobh. These 2 and 3 night packages incorporate a guided walk on the Titanic Trail, entry to the newly opened Titanic Experience, and entry into Cobh the Queenstown Story. Father Frank Browne is in many ways central to the story of Titanic and Cobh (Queenstown). Fr. Browne was an avid photographer and his collection of images of his journey in Titanic from Southampton to Queenstown remains the largest collection of pictures taken onboard Titanic. Some of his images appeared on the front pages of the world's press in the days following the sinking. His images have been of major importance to Titanic historians over the years and have appeared in almost all publications on the ship.

Although, Fr. Browne's passage was booked for Queenstown he did have a lucky escape. He was a theology student at the time and his uncle, then Bishop of Cloyne and based in Queenstown, sent him a ticket for the initial leg of Titanic's maiden voyage from Southampton to Cherbourg and then onto Queenstown. While on board '....Frank was befriended by an American millionaire couple who were seated at the same table in the liner's first class dining room. After one of the meals they invited him down to the Marconi room. They had him send a message to his superior in Dublin....asking permission to remain on board for the remainder of the voyage to New York. The American couple would pay his way.' (Father Browne's Titanic Album, E.E. O' Donnell, 2012) On arrival in Queenstown a telegraph from his superiors awaited him which simply read "GET OFF THAT SHIP." Fr. Eddie O' Donnell said the photographer kept the telegram in his wallet for the rest of his life telling people "it was the only time that holy obedience ever saved a man's life."

This is one of the most iconic 'Titanic' photographs of Cobh (Queenstown). It shows passengers gathering on the dock in front of the White Star Line Offices waiting to board one of the tenders from the nearby White Star pier. Before passengers boarded one of the tenders their eyes would be inspected on the pier by US doctors. Any passenger suffering from trachoma or other contagious disease was not allowed to board the tender and could not travel to the US. Its almost like US customs at Shannon Airport today!!!

The tenders Ireland and America would have then transported passengers from the pier to the waiting Titanic which lay at anchor at the harbour mouth.

The great thing about this picture is that you could take a photograph from this exact spot today and it would be almost exactly the same. The White Star Line building is still there and now houses the fabulous Titanic Experience, which has only recently opened. This is a fabulous exhibit which recreates the story of the Titanic and its visit to Cobh using innovative audio visual technology. It certainly brings it to life and is well worth visiting. This picture is of the Titanic as it lay at anchor at the mouth of Cork Harbour. Barely visible at the top of the last funnel is the head of one of the ship's stokers who had popped up to have a look. For those passengers on the aft deck who saw him, his blackened face caused a bit of a stir. The superstitious amongst them saw this as an ominous omen.

It is speculated that the stoker was a John Coffey who deserted the Titanic at Queenstown. John Coffey later related that he left Titanic as he a bad feeling about the impending voyage. However, as John was originally from Queenstown its more likely that he signed on Titanic to gain free passage from Southampton.

Titanic 100 Cobh 2012 Launch

After much anticipation, the launch of Titanic 100 Cobh 2012 took place yesterday afternoon. Prior to proceedings the Irish Naval Service ship, the LE Emer, was open to the public at the Deep Water Quay. Later at 4:30pm a large crowd gathered in the promenade, in front of the hotel, to witness the first of many commemorative events to recognise the sinking of the Titanic in 1912.

Local dignitaries assembled under the beautifully decorated Victorian bandstand, while Titanic 100 events director, Mark Anderson, was busy co-ordinating activities on the water aswell as directing ceremonies in accordance with protocol. Several speeches ensued which were followed by a brief but entertaining lecture by Dr. Michael Martin (Titanic Trail), detailing intriguing soundbites of Titanic's stopover in Cobh.

At 5pm there was a poignant gun salute exchange between Spike Island and the LE Emer. This was followed by the release of 123 flares from Spike to commemorate the 123 individuals

who boarded the Titanic from Cobh on the 11th April 1912. This was also a poignant moment as the flares drifted over the harbour directly in view of the crowds massed on the shore. In the fading twilight they illuminated the harbour and as each gradually faded the names of those individuals were called out. How dramatic!

What a great start to the commemorative year! We all look forward to the year long calender of events that will now unfold. (Titanic 100 Cobh 2012)

Come and join the people of Cobh and help start the first in a series of public events to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the RMS Titanic's Maiden Visit to Cobh (then Queenstown).
When in Cobh - Pay a visit to the Commodore Hotel - a hotel that was actually there at the time! In fact, some of the Irish passengers stayed in the hotel, the night prior to departure.

Iarnrod Eireann is offering its normal Sunday commuter train service from Cork's Kent Station to Cobh and return, (12 Cork-Cobh services in each direction), on New Years Day, Sunday 1st January 2012 to everyone wishing to travel to Cobh and take part in the first event planned by Titanic100-Cobh 2012.

Rail Fares are available for individuals, students and children with Kid+ Family Rail Tickets costing just €16.10 return from Cork to Cobh for any two adults and up to four children (under 16 years of age) travelling together. Titanic100-Cobh 2012 have arranged with the Irish Defence Forces - Naval Services, a tribute to one of the biggest maritime events in the last 100 years. The "Le Emer" will be berthed at the Port of Cork's Cobh's Cruise Terminal, which is located right next to Cobh Railway Station and Cobh Heritage Centre (5 mins walk to Commodore Hotel) and it will be open to the public from 2pm until 4pm on Sunday 1st January 2012 - New Years Day.

This will be followed at 4.30pm by a message from The Mayor of Cobh Town and other dignitaries in the Promenade Band Stand and a poignant gun salute exchange from Spike Island and the Le Emer.

People associated with the Titanic will be remembered with the release of 123 flares from Spike Island, representing the number of people who boarded The Titanic from Cobh on 11th April 1912.

This is an ideal opportunity for the whole family to come to Cobh, experience firsthand the inside of an Irish Navy vessel and acknowledge the start of the commemoration of the RMS Titanic's Centenary year.

Titanic 100 Cobh 2012 - Titanic Centenary New Year's Day event

Cobh Tourism reports '....2012 sees the centenary of the Titanic's only voyage and we will be welcoming this special New Year with an acknowledgment on New Year's Day.

To pay tribute to one of the biggest maritime events in the last 100 years, The Irish Navy will berth the LE Emer at the Deep Water Quay, outside the Cobh Heritage Centre and it will be open to the public from 2 pm to 4 pm. This will be followed by a message from the Cobh Town Mayor and other dignitaries and a poignant gun salute exchange from Spike Island and the LE Emer. At 5.30pm we will remember the people associated with the TItanic by releasing 123 flares from Spike Island, this number representing the people that boarded the Titanic from Cobh on the 11th of April 1912. Winter Cod fishing....

Are you one of those anglers who dreams of good cod fishing? Well Cork Harbour does have great cod fishing during the winter months and can offer the angler a great prospect of bagging a good catch of cod! The Commodore Hotel has teamed up with Geary Angling Services to offer you the chance to target these cod. For an all inclusive price of €69 you can have one day's fishing with Donie Geary, skipper of the John Boy, and one night's bed & breakfast at the Commodore Hotel. You can upgrade this package to include high tea of haddock and chips and a pint of guinness (or beer/lager of your choice) for an all inclusive price of €85 per person. Now that's great value!!! This offer is limited to groups of eight or more and is available from October 2011 through to March 2012.

If the last two seasons are anything to go by then the cod fishing should be hectic. Cobh Sea Angling Club have held light line competitions during this winter period and in many cases anglers were catching 50+ codling a trip. Have a look at these reports to give you an idea: March 2011 and April 2010.

Admittedly, many of the codling have been in the 1-2lb range. However, a good proportion of the fish have also been in the 3-4lb range aswell. This year we expect many of the fish to be bigger again as there has been superb fishing on the offshore reefs for large cod over the summer. In fact, if weather permits

Donie may opt to try the outer reefs for larger fish. However, the beauty of Cork Harbour is that it can be fished in all weathers and many of the marks that have been producing over the last two winters have been in the Harbour itself.

Best baits for the fishing is undoubtedly peeler crab and lugworm. Mussel can also be effective. If the outer reefs are fished, then mackeral baited hokkai's are the best option.

AN EXTRACT FROM THE CORK EXAMINER MONDAY 17TH OCTOBER 2011.
Kenmare-born Australian expatriate Frank O'Shea reflects on a recent visit to Cobh aboard the cruise ship, the Dawn Princess.
"The Dawn Princess which called to Cobh on July 24th carried 2000 passengers;....Passengers were still talking about the Reception they received in Cobh ("Cove, ma'am, not Cobe") and the effort that was made by the town to welcome them. They spoke about the bands and the music and the Irish dancing; they recalled the flowerpots and the gaily painted houses and the Australian flags.
Everyone was deeply affected by the way the town turned out to wave them off - the only port in the world to do so.
Three-quarters of the passengers were Australian. The remainder came from New Zealand and put up with their move to the second rank as Cobh declared July 24th Australia Day....
One man spoke about the many thousands for whom the last glimpse they would have of their native land was the same one he had as the Dawn Princess pulled slowly away.
Perhaps some context here would be useful. The liner docked at 40 ports in its round-the world cruise....Yet a number of those to whom I spoke put the six hours they spent in Cobh as the highlight....
This is surely a reminder that one of the best ways Ireland might get out of its economic mess is to use its strengths: hospitality and the ability to make people feel welcome.
Let's get back to what we have always done well. Bravo Cobh, for showing the way."

Rooftop launch for new website...

Well that was an unusual sight last week! 12 chinese lanterns launched from the rooftop garden of the Commodore Hotel. Special permission had to be granted from the Airport Authority...but it was worth it.

All this was part of the launch of the new Titanic Trail website. Click here to view. This site replaces the old site which has been in place for many years now and compliments the Titanic Trail tour which has been developed and delivered by historian Dr. Michael Martin. The new site is excellent and full of facts and information....well worth a visit!

Also, well worth a visit, if you are in Cobh, is a trip on the Titanic Trail itself. This guided tour leaves from the Commodore Hotel every morning at 11am and, in the summer, every afternoon from 2pm.

August Regatta

It's only two weeks to go to this year's Regatta and the anticipation is building. This three day event marks the pinnacle of Summer activities here in Cobh and families from near and far travel to enjoy the festivities....and there is plenty of things going on and plenty of things to do and see!

Each day there is an extensive rowing and sailing programme. Its great to view the yachts, many in full spinnaker, as they tussle for front position in the various races. The rowing races are also great to watch and there is great excitement as the various teams come close to the finishing line.

It's not just the racing and the competitive side of the regatta that's appealing but there just is plenty of activities going on. On the Sunday there is a carnival atmosphere in the promenade, which is set aside for families and young kids. There is plenty of face-painting, bouncy castles, clowns, and stilt-walkers to keep everyone entertained. In the main square there is plenty of acts on the main stage to entertain the night time revellers. On the Friday night there is the picking of the Queens which is always very popular with all. This is followed normally by entertainment from some of Ireland's top bands, as is the case on Saturday and Sunday night.

The highlight for everyone, though, is the Fireworks display. This takes place on Sunday night at 10pm. Make sure you're in early to secure a good vantage point as the town is normally thronged to see this....and no wonder; its reckoned that this 1/2 hour display is the best fireworks display in the country!!!

Frolicking seals....

With the main channel passing less than 100 metres in front of the hotel its amazing what you might see on a daily basis. Certainly, from a wildlife point of view you'd be quite surprised what you'd spot from time to time. It might be common dolphins, bottle-nosed dolphins, killer whales, or other large marine mammals. Well yesterday it was seals. Two seals kept onlookers amused as they frolicked in the water just off the promenade. The anglers on Kennedy Pier weren't amused, however, as the wiley seals managed to rob the mackeral off the hooks as the fisherman hauled them in. Oh oh! You can't keep everyone happy!!!

Brand new liner 'Marina' docked in Cobh yesterday. It was a pity that the weather wasn't as good as recent days but at least it was still warm. That didn't dampen the spirits of its 1200 passengers, many of whom took some time to wander around the town, combining a bit of shopping with sight-seeing.

Summer comes back with a bang...

Wow, what a day Tuesday was! With blue skies, calm winds, and the mercury rising to 26C, you'd be forgiven for thinking that we have a touch of Spanish weather. With weather like this there is no finer place in the World than Cobh, especially if you get a chance to get out on the water, which were lucky to do, as you can see from the snaps we took.

The Crown Princess was docked at the deep water quay. You could see many of its 3000 passengers enjoying the sun on her upper decks and around the pool. Many others took the opportunity to wander around Cobh. They'd have been forgiven for mistakenly believing they were in the Mediterranean!

The Crown Princess is here again on the 18th August and here's fingers crossed that the weather will be just as good!

Australia Day in Cobh

What a great day! Last Sunday was Australia Day in Cobh. The Dawn Princess arrived early in the morning with a load of 'Aussies.' This was their 60th day at sea as part of a 104 day World cruise that began in Sydney, Australia on 25th May 2011. Well actually there were a few Kiwi's amongst them; 400 to be exact but they were outnumbered by the Aussies who had 1500 in number.

Well they couldn't have got a better welcome, the Cobhites threw a party 'Cobh' style and there was a real carnival atmosphere around the town all day. The Aussies' seemed to have enjoyed it. Here are three different accounts of the day from passengers aboard the cruise liner:

Brass bands on the Promenade bandstand...

For the second time this year a visiting brass band played in the Promenade bandstand. What a great sound!

The Dawson Creek Kiwanis Community Band from Canada belted out the tunes on a sun scorched day during the week. With the fabulous weather a captive audience soon built up and were well entertained. This is exactly what the bandstand was made for and its great to see.

Being right on our doorstep a few of us from the hotel had to pop over and have a look.

On another note, lets hope this current spell of weather will hold out; it certainly puts everyone in good spirits!

Jimmy Crowley & Ben Hurley in concert...

What a great concert!!! Last Saturday night, as part of the 'See you in Cobh' fundraising concerts, legendary balladier, Jimmy Crowley, performed with local musician, Ben Hurley in front of a packed audience in the Jack Doyle Room.

This was the latest installment in a series of concerts which has seen some great local artists perform over the last 12 months or so. Its great to see local talent being so appreciated by local audiences. Jimmy Crowley is almost 'local' himself as he now lives in the town and plays on a regular basis in O' Sheas Bar and in the Jack Doyle Room.

In the footsteps of a queen....

What a historic month May was! Queen Elizabeth II made her first official visit to Ireland. Although, security was very tight over the first few days, you could certainly see that, by the time the Queen visited Cork on the last day of the tour, she was very relaxed and enjoying herself. The pic over is a classic and says it all. Here the Queen was visiting the English Market, and this pic shows her at the famous Kaye O' Connell fish stand. Pat O' Connell is a bit of a character and would bring a smile to anyone's face and quite obviously the Queen was enjoying the banter!

Queen Elizabeth's tour of Cork almost replicated the tour taken by Queen Victoria in the late 1840's. However, on that occasion Queen Victoria concentrated her visit to the lower harbour and the Cobh area. Cobh was of particular interest due to the port's significance to the British realm. 'Victoria herself arrived in 1849 to the booming of cannon on her first visit to Ireland and the town was for many years known as "Queenstown" to commemorate the occasion. She was so delighted by Cobh and the surrounding coast that she got our her watercolours (The Sunday Telegraph, May 18, 2003).'

The Commodore Hotel's connection to the royal visit is very direct as the following extract from the Commercial Queenstown 1894 attests to '...On the memorable visit of Her Majestey and the Prince Consort in the year 1849 the ground upon which the Hotel is built there was erected a pavilion for their entertainment, and on this spot the name of the town was changed from the Cove of Cork to Queenstown by Her Majesty the Queen.'

Following the Queen's visit a grandiose project was undertaken by Lord Midleton, the local Viscount, to develop the town as a Victorian spa retreat, the first tourist attraction of the day, if you will. This involved the reclamation of substantial tracts of land, the development of railway facilities, the development of a promenade, terraces, hotel, and baths. Lord Midleton commissioned the eminent architect of the day, Decimus Burton, to design the project. Burton's more prominent work included projects on Buckingham Palace, aswell as buildings and gardens of the Zoological Society in Regent's Park, London. The hotel was to be the centrepiece of the project.

The hotel was completed in 1854 and became one of the first purpose built hotels in the country. 'From its establishment, the Queens Hotel was exactly what its title suggests, a hotel for Royalty. Among its guests were King Edward VII, Queen Alexandria and King George VI. By the mid 1850's, Cobh had indeed become very popular as a health resort. It was ideally suited for this purpose being only a short coach ride from Cork and possessing a remarkable temperate climate. It was also of course the port of embarkation of her Majesty's troops (most notably during the Boer War) and the residence of the Admiral. The growing importance of trans-Atlantic Liner trade from Liverpool seemed to make it inevitable that Cobh would become a major Port of Call (Cobh Annual 1978).'

Highlight of the Liner season so far.....

Back at the start of the summer, the May weekend to be precise, we were treated to a unique event. Both the Celebrity Eclipse and the Independence of the Seas were in port, at the same time! Never before have two giant ocean going liners been in Cork Harbour together. One was leaving port while the other was docking.

Speculation was rife leading upto the day. Where would they pass? Would it be at the mouth of the Harbour? Would it be in the main channel opposite the Oil Refinery? What a surprise to the thousands of onlookers when the Independence of the Seas arrived, sailed up the channel, and the Celebrity Eclipse was still tied up at the Deep Water Quay. What's going on? Was the Independence too early? Was the Eclipse late?

What a surprise to everyone when the Independence passed the Eclipse, swivelled in mid channel, and as she did the Eclipse gently slipped he moorings, slipped out allowing the Independence to gently glide into her space. What a manoeuvre? What a sight? Wow!!!

Has summer returned?

Has the summer weather returned? Well it certainly has improved; yesterday and today were quite warm and the forecast for the week is good. Its about time as we really haven't had a run of good weather since April when the weather was fabulous!

Above is a pic of the 'Athena' which docked back in April when that weather was glorious. You can see from the pic that it was positively Mediterranean. Fingers crossed, that summer might be back!

2011 Liner season kicks off.....

The 2011 Liner season got under way with the arrival of Cunard's Queen Victoria. The ship docked at the nearby Deep Water Quay on the 11th April and the passengers were greeted by unseasonally warm weather.

The 'Independence of the Seas' visits once again

The ' Independence of the Seas' arrived in port yesterday and docked at the Deep Water Quay. She is a magnificent sight. The 'Independence' is one of the biggest liners in the World, and did in fact have that title when she was launched last year. Tied up along the quayside she looked absolutely huge. I walked out along the High Road to take a few pictures looking down on her and had to go nearly to the very end before I could fit her in the lens. There were plenty of activities in the town to entertain the passengers and crew. Would you believe there were nearly 4,500 passengers onboard and 1,500 crew. Wow, that's almost like a town in its own right. As they all streamed out there was a blues band playing in the bandstand of the promenade and a complete outdoor market along the length of Westbourne Place. As they were joined by sightseers coming into the town there were thousands milling about. Its a pity the weather didn't play its part as it had been beautiful all week with blue skies and temperatures in the twenties. However, the slight drizzle failed to dampen spirits. Indeed, there was a real festive buzz. As the ship was overnighting this continued on into the evening. We had 'Something Simple' playing in O' Shea's Bar. They went down a bomb. They are very good, though. A great traditional Irish band, the trio really belt out the more popular traditional tunes. The girl with the madolin is an exceptionally talented musician and really makes the band. Many of the passengers called in and were delighted. A lot of the passengers and crew also make their way to the Disco. In fact Club C was positively packed. In fact a great night was had allround and as the night revellers made their way back to the ship they were in great spirits.

Visit of 'The Eclipse' on her maiden voyage

On the 30th April, the first overnight liner of the year arrived into port. 'The Eclipse' was on her maiden voyage and was on a one night stop over before her return to Southampton. Here is a picture of her at dock on the Deep Water Quay, taken from the roof garden of the hotel.

Titanic Memorial

On the 16th May, Cobh Tourism held the annual commemoration of the sinking of the Lusitania. The centrepiece of the event once more culminated in a reading and service at the Lusitania monument in the square. However, a presentation by two East Cork divers afterwards in the Jack Doyle Room was most interesting and drew a large crowd.

Senator David Norris speaks at the Chamber Dinner

Last Friday night Senator David Norris was the guest speaker at the Cobh and Harbour Chamber Annual Dinner. What a breath of fresh air. He was brilliant; easily the best speaker the Chamber have had. He was funny, intelligent and insightful. The large crowd were entertained, enthralled, and couldn't get enough of his wisdom. The Banks, the Revenue Commissioners, and the Government all came in for a tongue lashing. Well deserved you might say!

End of season party for Stephen Ireland

With the premiership season over, Manchester City's Stephen Ireland returned back to Cobh for a week's break two week's ago. On the Saturday night Stephen threw a party for old classmates and friends in the Jack Doyle Room. No expense was spared and Stephen flew in a top DJ from Machester to give his buddies a right good knees up. Fair play to you Stephen, well done!

In memory of Mike Rudd

On the 8th May, we had a little unveiling ceremony. A number of months back the Irish Titanic Historical Society contacted us. They wanted to know would we put up a picture in memory of Mike Rudd.

Titanic 2012

Plans are well afoot in Cobh to mark the centenial anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. Cobh Tourism is central in putting together a development plan to get the town ready. One of the main objectives for 2012 is to achieve a national award in the Tidy Towns competition. The drive towards achieving this will ensure that the town will be looking its best for that centenary year.

The Welsh Invasion

For over 30 years Gilley Myles and the gang from Pontardulais have made the bi-annual pilgrimage to watch Wales play Ireland in the 6 Nations Rugby championship....but they watch it on the telly!!! It is now a time honoured tradition to follow the Welsh team onto Irish soil for the match in Dublin, but crossing the Irish sea is as far as it goes. After that many bands of Welshmen hunker down in favoured watering holes across the length and breadth of the country. That's not saying that there isn't any Welsh support in the stands of Landsowne Road or Croke Park, wherever the match may be....but there is by far a bigger contingent not at the match at all!!! ....and so it was again this year, as hordes of our near Celtic neighbours descended onto our shores once more.

This year Gilley had a big gang with him. No doubt the fact that Ireland were coming into the match as Grand Slam champions had made it all the more attractive. However, the launch of the Cork Swansea ferry service seemed to make Cobh as a destination more accessible. Despite this some of Gilley's number actually flew over from London after driving all the way down from Swansea. Phew!

The lads from Pontardulais were not going to be alone though. There was also a gang over from Hendy, their neighbouring village from across the bridge.

Snowed in...a first!!! Well almost....

Earlier this year we got snowed in. Its been a long time since this has happened. Various punters had reckoned it was 1991 since we saw this much snow. Not that it hasn't snowed in Cobh since then, but it is rarely this heavy...and it needs to be for snow to land 'down town.' Being so close to the sea, snow rarely lands and stays here and on the lower parts of the island. Up on the hills and heights snow has been seen more regularly. Indeed, a number of years ago we even had a 'White Christmas.' Then on Sunday 10th January it snowed....and snowed. By the afternoon there was a good accumulation of the white stuff around most of the town and as it got dark it started to land and build up down town. Living up on the heights I couldn't budge for most of the day and instead helped the kids with their snowman and the obligatory snow fight. However, by the evening cabin fever was setting in and I decided to venture down to the hotel for a few pints. I wasn't the only one as a few of the regulars had braved the elements having the same thoughts as I had. One of those oft spontaneous sessions ensued and as Winter tightened its icy grip outside we didn't care for it was warm and cosy in O'Sheas Bar.....
